AN UNDERGROUND RACE-RIDE SERIES
CHURCH is a series of open-invite training rides throughout the East Bay in 2023. Popping up throughout the year, CHURCH runs on open courses, has no speed limit and no podium.
So put on your Sunday best, load the kids in the van, and come pay your tithe of watts. Eternal salvation comes from the flyer you take off the front.
CHURCH 2
SUNDAY, 3/5/23, 1PM
POINT RICHMOND, CA
Back by popular demand, CHURCH 2 is back in Point Richmond.
Near the coast, past ferry terminals, and around old military buildings, CHURCH 2 is a flat 4.8-mile circuit with a punchy climb variation to finish.
There’s no cost for joining CHURCH, but we suggest a donation to Radical Adventure Riders, who have been at the front of the movement toward gender inclusivity and racial equity in cycling and the outdoors. If you’re like us and looking for resources on how to be an ally to FTWN-B and BIPOC folks in the cycling world and beyond, they have great resources.
Pre-riding the course is not required, but acquainting yourself with the technical sections before the ride is highly recommended.
Park/meet at East Brother’s parking lot at 12:30 pm for a course pre-ride. The ride will start at 1 p,m. Expect 1-1.5 hours of riding. Post-ride beers at East Brother.
THE COURSE
We’ll ride 5 laps of the 4.8 mile circuit on Canal Blvd before ending at the top of Seacliff Drive at the end of the last lap.
CHURCH TENETS
Stay in your lane. As this is an out-and-back course, riders will need to stay on their side of the road to keep everyone safe. The chicanes will tempt you to into the sin for crossing the double yellow, but don’t do it. We’ll kick you out if you do (no joke).
Watch for traffic. This is an open course, and the ride will slow/stop for traffic— though there should be minimal if any on the course. We’ll have folks out there dedicated to helping keep everyone safe.
Be safe. The same courtesies of all group rides exist here. Communicate with riders around you, and don’t assume someone will know what you’re doing. Be respectful of others, give space when it’s needed, and remember that this is just a training ride and you participate at your own risk. If you’re getting lapped/passed, please stay to the right, letting riders pass you on your left.
Have fun. Hostility and bad vibes are capital sins. While this is a drop-ride, it’s a short loop. If you’re shelled, re-join a group and see how long you can hold on. All congregants are welcome— bring the whole family and stay for coffee and donuts (aka beers) at East Brother after the service.
